Directions: The Tree Museum is a
200 acre woodland lot near Gravenhurst. From Toronto head north on Hwy
400 and Hwy 11 to Doe Lake Road (Muskoka Road 6). Just north of
Gravenhurst turn right (east) on Doe Lake Rd. Follow Doe Lake Rd for
approximately 10 minutes and turn right at the blue Tree Museum sign.
Park and walk in or take a wagon ride in at the opening. Wear sturdy
walking shoes or hiking boots. My site is one of the first on the way in
- about 1 k - and it is another 1.2 k to the centre of the site where
the Tree Museum house/gallery is. There are outdoor contemporary art
installations all along the route. There will be refreshments at the
Tree Museum house/gallery at the opening. September and October are good
months to visit and signs point the way to the installations for self
directed visits.
For the past 13 years the Tree Museum has been a
veritable laboratory for contemporary creativity in an outdoor space. It
is a living and growing venue, a place where the curators Lightman and
O'Callaghan set very flexible boundaries within which the invited
artists explore and create site-specific work. afterLandscape is an
exhibition where four artists Penelope Stewart and Jeannie Thib
(Canadian) and Australian Artists Bev Hogg and Trish Roan, were invited
to explore what this landscape means to them. The artists have been
selected not for their similarities but for their differences so that
each takes on a particular role within the spectrum of the whole.
This is a multi year project which started in 2009, when EJ Lightman,
Anne O'Callaghan, Penelope Stewart and Jeannie Thib where artists in
residence in Canberra, Australia. The project will be completed in 2012
when all artists- Bev Hogg, EJ Lightman, Anne O'Callaghan, Trish Roan,
Penelope Stewart and Jeannie Thib will exhibit at Craft ACT: Craft and
Design Centre, Canberra, Australia.
At this years Annual Opening on Sunday September 5, we will launch the
2008/2009 exhibition catalogue.
The Tree Museum and the artists thank The Canada
Council for the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council and the Walter & Duncan
Gordon Foundation, MAG massart guide and RHEN Communications Group for
